I've been a fan of C.W. Gortner's work for a few years now. His research is always impeccable, and his prose is rich. This book is no exception. "The Last Queen" is the story of "Juana the Mad," the last queen of Castile. Her parents, Ferdinand and Isabella, are getting older and they arrange a marri...

The last Queen a Novel by C.W. Gortner tells the moving tale of Juana la Loca (the mad)." She was if nothing else an extraordinary figure for her time" I love Historical Fiction but am not a fan of novels about the English Throne and was delighted when I came across this Novel which brings to lif...

I selected The Last Queen by C. W. Gortner because the novel explores the life of Juana of Spain, daughter of Isabella and Ferdinand and sister of Catherine of Aragon. She married Phillip the Fair of Flanders and two of their sons were to become Holy Roman Emperors (Charles V and Ferdinand I). The...

I had a lot of feelings while reading this book. I came to really love and enjoy Juana's narrative so much that I was dreading the end, knowing how her life was going to turn out. The scene where she was waiting in the wings to confront her power-hungry husband and the Cortes? I was anxious, my hear...

It's hard to grade this one, for my personal enjoyment it gets a lesser grade cos I felt so sad, but as for the writing and story it gets a higher grade. Because it was really good.Juana de Loca as she is known as did not have an easy life. Married at 16 to a handsome prince she was happy, for a whi...

I put this book on my to-read list with reservations. From the book description, it says Juana la Loca was driven to insanity. After reading some non-fic history, I think Juana la Loca was indeed pretty freaking loca since birth. But oh well. Looking to read a good story, not a painstakingly wri...

There is a reason why historical fiction is my favorite genre and this book is one of them. An author that can take an historical figure, write a book about him/her based in fact, and make it historically accurate and entertaining at the same time is truly gifted. I have been interested in Queen J...

It takes a special author to bring a character to life - especially a famous figure from the past. C. W. Gortner is one of those gifted authors. From the first page, Juana of Castile comes to life and holds you captive as she reveals her life to the reader.I must confess, I've never really known any...

AFTER READING: Wow, another 5 star book. F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! First let me mention that the status updates are wrong. There are 428 pages in this book! Now, I will try and summarize a teeny bit why I loved it, and let me say I am hooked, bait, line and sinker; I have to read more about the royal history...

I love Historical Fiction and Spain. So this book was a win-win. I like the way the author captured the character and the way her views. There were a few moments where it pushed toward the romance genre, but overall a good read.
