Verhulst schrijft met zijn gebruikelijke flair en gevoel voor humor, maar het verhaal kent minder diepgang dan pakweg Mevrouw Verona daalt de heuvel af of De Helaasheid der Dingen. Naar het einde toe lijkt de spanning en de drive dan ook wat verdwenen.
