Dirk Schoenmaker is Dean of the Duisenberg school of finance and Professor of Finance, Banking and Insurance at the VU University Amsterdam. Before his appointment at the Duisenberg school in 2009, he worked at the Dutch Ministry of Finance and at the Bank of England. He is a regular consultant for the IMF, the OECD and the European Commission. He is also a member of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board in Frankfurt. At the Duisenberg school of finance, he likes to promote "new thinking in finance". Examples are the upcoming Banking Union in Europe and the emerging field of macro-finance. More broadly, international finance creates governance challenges, which he addresses in his new book: Governance of International Banking. To incorporate the profound changes in the European financial system in teaching, he has co-authored a textbook: Financial Markets and Institutions, A European Perspective.
