Excerpts from Hundreds of Readers’ Letters
Dorothy Aksamit, “Dear Dr. Bill, You have shattered my husbands peaceful retirement… Congratulations! That's the best guide to a town I've seen.”
Jean Marc “We are a French family... read [Discover Gulangyu] straight away the same evening…We have very little information in French…even in travel guide as Lonely Planet, Petit Futé or Guidee bleu Hachette. Moreover, I appreciate your sense of humour. So I wanted to say you a big thanks for having written these books.”
C. Parker. “I marvel at your ability to synchronize so many small chunks of information with wonderful historical research and personal/family exploration. Your writing is entertaining, irreverent, practical, whimsical, and full of useful information for newcomers and oldies alike. Thanks.”
Joanne C. “I bought some to take back home… my grand-aunty, who had not returned to Amoy after leaving for Singapore over 60 years ago, told me a few copies were not enough for her family. The young generation all want to read it.”
Karl R. (author). “I started to just read through it, but your humor was like a magnet; I wanted to see what your next witticism was going to be…Well done.”
K.R, Ph.D., “I got your book while in Xiamen and read it from cover to cover.”
James and Norma M. “Your book brings extraordinary excitement to our minds and spirits…we discuss the universe in which you live; each time, I hanker to book a flight and experience …Amoy.”
Joy J. “… vivid descriptions and detailed information…almost every aspect ---location, geography, history, culture, local customs and festivals, food, shopping , sight-seeing… What grabs me is not only the kaleidoscope of the introduction of Xiamen, but also the sense of humor. And the pictures from your hand are lovely, fresh, humorous, just like your words.”
Hugh B. “It is the #1 among Xiamen guidebooks. It is obvious that you had spent a lot of time & done a lot of work to investigate and study… I could not imagine all the toil.”
Martin R. (Germany), “[Xiamen] is the best… your book…I have to say, ITS JUST GREAT.”
Dave H. “…last night I read it from cover to cover…Just your summary of bus lines is worth the price!”
Max B. “Your book, Amoy Magic, has made my first few days here in Xiamen much more comfortable than they would have been without it. At dinner I am confronted with a large Chinese menu with the instructions, “order anything you want.” Fat chance. But Amoy Magic saved me from starvation -- all 250 pounds of me.”
Richard H., Washington, D.C. “I read it on the flight home and only regret that I did not have it on the way over. It was great fun and I loved the puns, particularly the visual puns.”
Michelle, DELL, “You know more culture and history than locals. It is a good guide and full of fun. You are a genius.”
Lisa N. (Chicago), “Xiamen is wonderful, as you say, and your book is a life
