Very strong writing, but the plot and themes do not connect with me. Another book by a middle aged man about a middle aged man and his sexual desires. Feels a bit thin in its metaphors/analogies. Sometimes reads as frustrating non-committal to the themes it's raising.

This book was not for me. The dialogue was wooden, and I felt thoroughly unengaged throughout the whole story. I couldn't get into the mindset of any of the characters. Events would occur - many of them horrific - but they felt rather flat and distant. It's not that I wouldn't recommend the boo...

http://msarki.tumblr.com/post/69804648643/disgrace-by-j-m-coetzeeThroughout its entirety there is always a measure of wrestling, and therefore impossibly hard to pin down in the order of boxing this novel Disgrace into a neat and manageable package. I am afraid the book insists on speaking for itse...

I fail to comprehend why most people don't find it in them to sympathise with David Lurie's predicament. He has done nothing wrong except to provoke the self-righteousness of a society in moral decay. A society that cannot tolerate sexual infringements across generations. When was it actually that h...

I don't think the book is a good representation of Africa but character-wise, I do find this book interesting. Don't get that wrong, I don't like the book and I don't think the book is flawless either. I was more than a bit more than just peeved at David Lurie and his naive impression on the world a...

There are many reasons a reader may not like J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace. For starters, the subject matter is difficult. Some may find the book lacking in story. The writing is very Bookerish—it's sophisticated, it taps the emotions through the cerebral. One could say the novel is racist. Sexist. Distur...

Read in about a day... Good litterature, made a big impression on me, but it's so depressing. Despicable characters. No future, no hope. A pretty convincing warning about what happens when you decide to fuck your students. I'll keep it in mind. Think I'll go back to SF and fantasy sooner than later...
