If the option were available to me I would give this book three and a half stars. That option is not available to me and so I will be giving a three star rating. Had this book not started out as slow going as it did, I might have given it four or five stars. This book took me nearly a month to read....

Set during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, this novel brings this episode in history to life through the character Matthew Shardlake. He is developed throughout the story, creating a multi-faceted, compelling protagonist. Passers by only see Shardlake as a cripple, but the reade...
