'Doll Bones' starts as a last-Goonie-weekend kind of story, where Zach and Alice hear out their friend Poppy, and follow her on a quest to dispose of cursed doll at the request of a dead girl. Zach has been facing a lot of pressure from his Dad about playing imagination games with two girls, and usi...

This was a quick read, nothing special, but enjoyable nonetheless. I am slightly disappointed, because after loving The Curse Workers trilogy I was expecting more from Holly Black. But it wasn't bad, and I do recommend it. Doll Bones is a perfect blend of cute and creepy, which actually works, str...

Today We DidBest friends, Zach, Alice and Poppy have made up a fantastical world that they play out with dolls and figurines. The Queen in this world is a very old, fine bone china doll, that is kept displayed behind glass at Poppy’s house. When Zach unexpectedly refuses to play the game any more, P...

I received a copy of this via NetGalley, for an honest review The basic plot of this book, the idea of a creepy-looking doll being possessed, and the main problem the protagonists face, growing up, really interested me. Holly Black does a great job with creeping the reader out with the doll and ...

I listened to Doll Bones because I had been avoiding reading it due to the creepy cover....great audiobook! This is a book that I know kids will pick up because of the creepy factor, but they will get a wonderful tale of growing up and friendship. Grades 5+ Listened to July 2014

I've loved Holly Black's books since I was a teenager reading Tithe and this one was no exception. I really felt this book - believing and wanting to believe getting all mixed up, letting to and moving on and not losing hold of that magic. I'm so glad it ended with the possibility open of them still...

Engaging & slightly creepy, with lots of adventure, a bit of supernatural, but most of all a lot of lessons on the intermediate stage of life between childhood & adolescence. Formal review to come. UTA: Reading Doll Bones through the lens of its recent Newbery Honor status made for an interesting ex...

Well hello, my Newbery pick. What a pitch-perfect coming-of-age, changing world, just-creepy-enough story. It has characters I adored, questions I wanted to answer, and just a touch of magical realism. I literally could not put it down, and read it in one sitting.

Gorgeously written, fun, bittersweet, touching, and yes, creepy. Just don't expect a straight-up horror novel out of it and you'll be fine.
