This felt like it wanted to be two books. I wish it either concentrated more singularly on the nameless protagonist or on the role that baseball played in camp. Also the pitcher and the guard in the book both looked Asian to me. I'm not sure if that was on purpose since the pitcher is explicitly not...
My favorite thing about publishers Lee & Low Books is that they publish these picture books about awesome PoC people might not know about. I first learned about Sammy Lee during the 2010 London Olympics, and this is one of the only books I've been able to find about him. Luckily it's a good one.
This is a great introduction to Sugihara's story. Very moving. I might have to check out one of the adult biographies on him now.
I really enjoyed this book about the Japanese camps in the US during WWII. It follows a Japanese family and their boy who joins the baseball team within the camp, and joining the baseball team at school when he ends up leaving the camp and the feeling of being left out.
