I love most of Patricia Briggs' books but I could not get into this duology. The characters never resonated with me.

I wasn’t sure how I would like this one, but in the end I really did. The characters were nicely drawn and the world was an interesting one. There’s a sequel, which I will definitely try to read. [June 2011]
I liked the idea and the characters but not the execution. Too much pain and evil; torture, pedophiles, sadists. A true lack of detailed characterization and dialogue. It is a story with enough heart and depth to have been amazing and touching, but which severely lacked finesse and, I believe, matur...
Loved the tale of Ward to not so stupid man. His quest to save his lands and his friends and family takes the reader on a whirlwind ride filled with magic and lore.

Briggs is a really great storyteller. I can't recommend her work enough.
