This is a very delightful Cornish variant of the Rumpelstiltskin tale. I love the illustrations (which won the Caldecott in 1974). I also love the sly humor throughout and the quirky regional flavor of both the story and the language. Lots of fun!
Duffy makes a deal with the devil to spin socks and other garments for Squire Lovel. She must guess the devil's name by the end of 3 years or he will take her away.
