Edgar Morin is the most adventurous and ambitious thinker to connect physics, biology, and the human and cognitive sciences, not through the determination of the old Newtonian universe, but through "self organization" - the theory that claims the 20th-century crisis of coherence between the sciences can be solved by combining order with disorder. His achievements as an opponent of all kinds of determination have helped shape French and European culture towards and through the collapse of Marxism. Morin is now recognized as the doyen of French intellectuals and perceived among English language scholars to be the most promising thinker on the post-Marxist French left. This volume articulates both the intellectual and cultural arguments of Morin's work and engages themes such as the philosophical significance of New Physics, the relationship between man and machine, bio-ethics and ecology.
