Galeano is a Uruguayan journalist/writer who has written a magesterial three-volume expansion on this book since it was published in 1970. Really wasn't sure I would like this book when I read the description. I wasn't sure I was up for a three volume history of the Americas in the guise of literature. But I ended up enjoying it and really looking forward to the next 2 volumes of the series (which I won't get to right away, since they ...

It took me a while to get through it, but it was well worth it. You can find my review over in my personal blog here.

An interesting book -- it has been influential in some circles -- and it is certainly finely written. I am also sympathetic to what he says. But the book is too repetitive and rhetorical for my tastes. It is enough for me to read once his outrage, and then to let the facts speak for themselves. ...

Interesting book. My favorite quote was a piece of graffiti scrawled on a wall: Eliminate poverty--shoot a beggar. It just goes to show you how hard-hearted some people really are.
