A showcase of New York history from 1664 to the present day, told through the stories of several New York based (mostly old money Anglo and Dutch) families. I initially found it very frustrating because the narrative would switch to a new character/generation just as something interesting seemed t...

A History Nut's Romantic State of Mind
Just the kind of historical fiction I love. Lots of historical details about a city that I know well and limited romance elements. If I wanted a romance story I would have read a historical romance. When I read historical fiction, I want heavy historical details and a in-depth presentation of the ti...

I enjoyed this book. But I think I was predisposed to like the novel as I love Paris. I enjoyed reading about the history. I liked reading about the trajectory of each family and how their lives were intertwined across the generations. Some of it was cliched, but overall it's a good read.

This may have been 5 stars if I had read it rather than listening. Finding the family tree on Edward Rutherfurd's we...

Rutherfurd's style of taking us into a historic setting is different than anything I've seen elsewhere. He has a gentle tone, telling the story through a family that might carry on through generations, moving from one character to another as time passes. I found it an interesting way to observe th...

Well that was epic! Didn't follow as well as the previous books of his I've read (Russka, London and Paris). Seemed to be focussed in one family where the others have had a more diverse mix.

"Paris" is the story of three families: the aristocratic Cygnes, and the poor/peasant LeSourds and Gascons. Author Edward Rutherfurd takes us through the families' history ... and how they intertwine ... from the 17th Century up through 1968.Along the way, we see the French Revolution, the Belle Epo...

Phew, that was a long read! Unlike The Pillars of the Earth, it was not always an easy read. I waffled a bit between giving it three or four stars, but ultimately decided that the wealth of historical information contained within, merited the higher rating. The book covered somewhere in the vicinit...
