Unlike the longer works, this one really gives a sense of the world (or a larger part of it), rather than one specific sub-culture. Contexts may change but people stay the same. It's quite easy to imagine a lot of this happening now, too. The Automatic Hotel is hysterical.

There was a time when I loved reading Wolfe, when I thought him incisive and amusing. In retrospect, particularly after reading the execrable I am Charlotte Simmons I think he's probably just a hideous snob and always has been.
