Elissa Durwood Grodin was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the fourth of six children. One of her earliest memories is attending pre-school at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She attended Antioch and Dartmouth Colleges, and The School of Visual Arts in NYC. When she lived in London she wrote for the Times Literary Supplement. She is married to actor/writer Charles Grodin.
