Elizabeth Davis has been a midwife for over 35 years; 90 percent of the births she has assisted have taken place at home. She initiated the development of midwifery certification in California and was instrumental in getting legislation passed to decriminalize the profession in her state. She also spearheaded national certification for midwives in the United States by founding the Certification Task Force. She is a past Chair of the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) Education Committee, and a past President of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), a national accrediting body for direct-entry midwifery education. Co-Director of the National Midwifery Institute, she lectures internationally to promote an integrated view of birth, sexuality, family, and ecology.
