My research and writing center on the U.S.-Mexico borderland areas of Texas. My family has lived here for eight generations and I appreciate the way people here can handle adversity and challenges with common sense often cloaked in the language of religion and magic. San Antonio is cultural cross-roads; it's people an embodiment of a history which continues to shape our lives. The lessons learned help us map our future. They All Want Magic comes from what a healer said to me in response to my question, "what is it that people want?" She said, "they want to be healed just like that (waving her hand like a wand). So do you. But the truth is, there is no magic, there is only work. We have to work to be healed; to be happy."My book is a mixture of memoir, anthropology, history, the healers and their work. I also argue that all of us are healers, we just don't know it. It is in the belief that humans beings are connected to all others and to the world which outlines the foundation of curanderismo. My time with the healers changed me. I sit in two worlds-as a cultural creature and as an anthropologist. They are sometimes in conflict but life is never boring
