I liked the Lantern thing, but I did not like how uninterested Anya is in her magical abilities. She's basically like "Oh yeah, I do this thing... but I dunno how or why." Zero fucks given. Also, the romantic interest being in a coma for most of the book was laaame.
3.7 stars, because:a) It kind of dragged on needlessly, particularly in the middle, but Anya was likable enough to make it bearable.and b) WACKO LOVE INTEREST YES.
In her debut novel, Laura Bickle introduces the elements of fire that can be harnessed and used by elemental people.Detroit is a city that has had a hard time, unemployment, despair are visible within the people of the city and crime is never far behind. Anya Kalinczyk is an arson investigator with...
This is the first book in the Anya Kalinczyk Series and before this book tour this book wasn't really on my radar. I may have seen it in passing, but it never really registered for me. Well it's registered now, that's for sure. The book opens with Anya Kalinczyk showing up at a haunted house, where ...
I felt this was a bit different from the usual urban fantasy fare and I really enjoyed it. The protagonist was practical and fairly normal. She has a day job that she loves and it's one that it's hard for women to break into (though that's not mentioned) but she's moved up in the ranks. The descript...
I do love a good sidekick and this book had such a good one. A salamander named Sparky who chased cats and licked toasters cos he likes electricity. But to the book then. Anya can see ghosts and eats them. Well the bad ones as she does not always feel good afterwards. She is a Lantern. She was not ...
Each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. - Edgar Allan PoeAnya Kalinczyk is an arson investigator with the Detroit Fire Department during the day. when night falls, she assists the Detroit Area Ghost Researchers (DAGR). Anya is also a medium of the rarest type. she is a Lantern ...
3.5This book could've been better. It was heavy on the description and internal thoughts and not so big on the action and the dialogue. It did little for character development though there were lots of characters and it even managed to make me question the moral fiber of our heroine.Hurrah?
4.5 starsI liked Embers a lot! Great characters, tons of suspense, a really mean demon, and Sparky the fire elemental! The ending was a bit too pat, but the premise and setting kept me locked on the story. I am looking forward to more books by Laura Bickle - I love her storytelling style.Full rev...
