In the spring of 2004, I was an overeducated DC secretary struggling to break into journalism. Then travel grants took me to Iraq and Afghanistan in order to observe the wars and the performance of US servicewomen. I've since published over twenty articles on the subject, and my book _Women in the Line of Fire_ is the first serious book on the subject of women in the military or in combat to appear since 9/11.
