It was OK. There was much that I liked, including the vividness of the writing. But while Allende’s style enhances the mystical quality of the story, it can also be fatiguing to work through and this was not a short novel.

The first half of the book is essentially plotless and meanders imaginatively into various bizarre corners. The second half does discover a sort of plot using some characters and events from the first half, but it never really coalesces into much of a story. I give the book bonus points for imagery...
It's hard for me to put into words what I enjoyed so much about this novel. It's another Allende that I've read and enjoyed more than once. It's so detailed and absorbing that it always feels like I'm reading it for the first time. Through a unique dual narrative Allende chronicles the lives of E...
