Here's the problem with this book: I never really got any idea why Fantomas was doing all this shit. As early 20th century pulp fiction goes, it doesn't get much better than this. There's a real element of the gothic and the labyrinth here that lifts it above such delights as Arsène Lupin and similar sleuths.
