Born in 1978, the grandson of a playwright, the great-great-great-great-grandson of a Gaelic Highland poet, and a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, Fergus Cannan is a historian whose publications include Scottish Arms and Armour ('excellent', Military Illustrated) and Galloglass 1250-1600: Gaelic Mercenary Warrior ('fascinating', Ulster Journal of Archaeology). The author of many other works (including three comic books in D.C. Thomson's popular Commando series), he was a contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages, and presented the feature about battles of the Scottish War of Independence for the Blu-ray DVD release of Braveheart. After working with the sculpture collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, he taught medieval history and English literature with the Workers' Educational Association, and is now Associate Curator of Object of Devotion, a US touring exhibition of the V&A's medieval English alabaster sculpture.Read his article about Scottish armourers at:www.macnabclanuk.orgObject of Devotion, touring US museums 2010-14:http://www.asiexhibitions.org/Object-of-Devotion.html(Author photo: Andrew Hayes)
