The photo displayed does not do justice to the fine printed image which is flawless with precise detail and nuance of shading from black to grey to white, the full range which Adams Adams sought to reveal in his photographs.
In the early 1960s the President of the UC system, Clark Kerr, approached Ansel Adams about doing a project to mark the centennial celebration of the founding of the University of California which would occur in 1968. Kerr was familiar with the photographic work of Adams and wanted Ansel to capture the breadth and diversity of the UC system with its campuses, natural reserves, laboratories, and research stations.
Ansel agreed and suggested that his collaborator, Nancy Newhall, write the text for the planned book which was published by the McGraw Hill Book Company. The agreement with Adams also specified that a quantity of fine prints covering the project would be given to the University.
The collection of 605 fine prints remained in the archive at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley and were not exhibited publicly until an exhibition was mounted by the University of California, Irvine via the generosity of a funding grant from the Pacific Telesis Foundation. That grant allowed the exhibition of one hundred prints from the collection which toured six campuses in the UC system and The Oakland Museum. Pacific Telesis also lent their collection of Ansel Adams prints known as "The Museum Set" which accompanied the touring exhibition.
