In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," For Whom the Bell Tolls. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise. "If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

4.0 Timeless classic
Although I despise the overall smartass macho behaviour of Hemingways male protagonist, For Whom the Bell Tolls deserves every bit of praise it got since its publication.Yet I am still a bit torn about what to write here, because with every aspect I want to highlight as being amazing and extraordina...

5.0 Książka czytana ale czy zrozumiana?
Ciężko coś napisać o książce, która ukazała się 75 lat temu i do dnia dzisiejszego jest czytana. Jeżeli czytana to i opiniowana. Jak przeczytałem u N.N. Taleba w „Antykruchości” - książki jeżeli były czytane przez 75 (moje dodanie czasu) to będą czytane przez kolejnych 75 lat. Tak „Komu bije dzwon” ...

4.0 The futility of fighting on the losing side
This is one of those books that I have been meaning to read for quite a while, even if it is only because of the Metellica song of the same name (which, by the way, was based on the book, and you watch the official video clip here – you will notice that, if you have read the book that is, it include...

4.0 For Whom the Bell Tolls
Who knew you could pack in so much humanity into three days. I did find the dialogue a bit distracting (the translation of his characters' Spanish is often more literal than literary) at first and I suppose he wrote it that way intentionally to evoke something, but it was lost on me. That aside this...

Powrót do KOMU ...
