This entry in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series is pleasant enough. I enjoyed it while I read it, and some of the references to Russian folklore were fun. However, it's the kind of book that drifts right out of my mind as soon as I put it down. Pretty much the epitome of a C+ to me - not bad but not ...

3.5 rounded up. Nice story. Appearances by a couple from the previous book. It did take about a 1/3 of the book before the story got underway. (The first 1/3 was Katya came into possession of the paper bird). Once it did, the pacing was pretty good. Good ending.

Fortune's Fool is a fantastical, fairy tale style novel that is more romance than anything else with a fair bit of adventure thrown in. Katya, the story's main character, is a mermaid who can go on land. She acts as the eyes and ears for her father, who is the kind of the underwater lands. Topside, ...

Once again, I'm not sure which stories this book is based on. Parts of it reminded me of The Little Mermaid, since Katya is at least part mermaid. I think her mom is also part siren, but I don't think that's ever stated outright. This one is also more like a cracked/twisted fairy tale than a romance...

Combine "The Little Mermaid" with "The Firebird" and you'll get "Fortune's Fool" -- but this book has a twist. As with Lackey's other 500 Kingdoms novels, the fairytale Tradition is always trying to interfere and direct things along a certain path. This time, though, seventh son Prince Sasha is also...

Charming from the fist page, the latest installment of The Five Hundred Kingdoms is retelling/reinvention of several different influences. There is a bit of The Little Mermaid, and elements of Russian folktales and a bit of Greek legend (Sirens/Siren blood). I enjoyed this one just as much as One G...

I relished reading this book. It has a nice fantasy/fairytale plot that’s involves outwitting “The Tradition”. I enjoyed voyaging through different myths, legends and fairy tales created from Japan, Russia and the Middle Eastern Regions. The characters were created with the right hint of courage, uni...

Of the four Five Hundred Kingdoms books out, this is far and away my favorite one. It has wonderful characters, an exciting set of stories, and most notably, beautiful settings.I don't know if it was Mercedes Lackey's vivid descriptions or my own personal hangups from a childhood spent watching The ...

Don't get me wrong. I like this book. However I do feel that the series is deteriorating as it goes. This is the 3rd of the tales of the 500 kingdoms. I still adore the premise of the Tradition trying to force events into a familiar path, and the use of the various types of magic to nudge the Tradit...
