This entry in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series is pleasant enough. I enjoyed it while I read it, and some of the references to Russian folklore were fun. 3.5 rounded up. Nice story. Appearances by a couple from the previous book. It did take about a 1/3 of the book before the story got underway. (The first 1/3 was Katya came into possession of the paper bird). Once it did, the pacing was pretty good. Good ending.

Combine "The Little Mermaid" with "The Firebird" and you'll get "Fortune's Fool" -- but this book has a twist. As with Lackey's other 500 Kingdoms novels, the fairytale Tradition is always trying to interfere and direct things along a certain path. This time, though, seventh son Prince Sasha is also...
