For more reviews, check out my blog: craft-cycleI will start by saying that I love reading retellings, especially fairy tale retellings. I don't recall really liking fairy tales all that much growing up, but now as a adult, I cannot get enough of fresh spins on the classics. However, I was kind of di...

t's interesting using this book in a class. The Swan stories are the most popular, and the quiet ones about relationships confuse people for some reason. I liked "Warm-Mouth" far more on this re-read.Old ReviewThere is a misnomer on the cover of this book. Some short stories in this volume have not...

An eclectic collection of re-imagined tales by some well-known and respected authors, primarily hailing from the fantasy/science fiction section. As in most anthologies, there is variation in the quality of the stories-hence the three-star rating. Some were pretty experimental, while others more c...

edit: After so careful thought and reading a few other reviews I decided to drop my rating. There is just too much wrong with this book, and "pretty words" can't fix it. As on review stated very well: "fucking weird". The author wrote about college like she hadn't ever set foot on a campus. You don'...

This is a solid group of short stories. My favorite story was "Michael's Little Sister" by C.S Adler. I didn't have much of an emotional response to any of the others, but most of the stories were good and I did enjoy them. The only one I actually disliked is "Blood Sister" by Jane Yolen. I have o...

The first story is called Snow, and is a touching retelling of Snow White that is more about found families than anything, although it touches upon a common theme in Lia Block’s work: the outcasts, those who don’t fit into society as most people view it. The freaks, as she puts it in this story. ...

The Secret History of Fantasy is a 19-story collection of what I'm given to understand is unusual or different fantasy, along with a couple nonfiction essays about the genre as a whole (and of course, the forward by Peter Beagle). Taken as a whole, it was a varied and sometimes fascinating read, tho...

A life changing and frightening event happened to Liv when she turned thirteen. All she really remembers is the rage that overcame her when her mother arrived from a hunting trip with wolf as her prize. Afraid of her reaction she rarely allows herself to feel anything except for when she is around h...

Poor storytelling, too much message-sending, bland characters, unbelievable and predictable settings and situations, unreadable short stories that no teen will find appealing. Sorry, I did not enjoy this at all and I don't think teens will either.
