Perhaps if one first read this as a child it would be more effective;: it came across as heavy-handed to me. When the other mice are gathering food for winter the titular hero just sits around, but in his season he provides spoken art to warm the hearts of the others. Library copy.

★★★★★Frederic by Leo LionniThis is a nice story about 4 mice, preparing for the winter, and one sitting and watching. He gives them excuse after excuse, about why he is not helping. But as it turns out, his preparation, may be just what they need to get though the winter.
