FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE is the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women-of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth-who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present-for Evelyn and for us-will never quite be the same.

5.0 Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe
This is an all-time classic in lesbian romance. In fact, it can just be termed as an all-time classic. It is a truly dazzling work of non-linear narrative – one of the most difficult types of writing to carry off. After all, I loved the movie and of course they always say that the book was better than the movie...I doubted it! I was wrong to an extent... Not quite...

4.0 More of a 3.5 Star Read Honestly
The problem most of the time is the book is better than the movie. In this case, I found the movie to be better than the book. I think the fact that book jumped around a lot made it a bit hard to follow. And the ending was definitely bittersweet with so many characters who had lived with each othe...

4.0 Book 53/100: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
(I got this one from NPR's 100 Best Beach Books Ever).Although I knew that this book was beloved by many queer women, I always thought it was because a same-sex love story could be "read into" Idgie's and Ruth's friendship. I saw the movie as a kid and at the time accepted "friendship" as a believab...
