Garrett Caples is a poet and freelance writer living in San Francisco, CA. He is the author of two full-length poetry collections, The Garrett Caples Reader (Black Square, 1999) and Complications (Meritage, 2007), and the book of essays, Retrievals (Wave, 2014), concerning overlooked and/or forgotten writers and artists. He also wrote a pamphlet for Wave Books, Quintessence of the Minor: Symbolist Poetry in English (2010). For many years, he was the primary hip-hop critic for the San Francisco Bay Guardian. He is also an editor at City Lights Books, where he curates the Spotlight poetry series. Among his major editorial projects are co-editing The Collected Poems of Philip Lamantia (California, 2013), Particulars of Place by Richard O. Moore (Omnidawn, 2015), and Incidents of Travel in Poetry: New and Selected Poems by Frank Lima (City Lights, 2015). He has blogged for the Poetry Foundation (poetry foundation.org) and City Lights (blog.citylights.com).
