George R. Kravis II, a collector and philanthropist who has cultivated one of the preeminent collections of industrial design, established the Kravis Design Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2013. 100 Designs for a Modern World is a curated overview of the most influential pieces of modern industrial design from 1900 to the present day.George Kravis II, a Tulsa-based philanthropist and collector, has assembled one of the largest leading collections of industrial design in the U.S. Its focus is objects and products created by central figures in the history of design from Peter Berens to Yves Behar. International in scope, the George Kravis Collection includes works from c. 1900 to the present, with particular strengths in American industrial design of the 1930s and '40s. Formerly the owner of Tulsa's KRAV/KGTO radio stations, Kravis was a pioneer in the FM broadcasting business in the 1960s when he started collecting posters by leading graphic designers to enhance his office. Today Kravis is known for his community leadership and arts patronage. As a trustee for his parents' foundation for arts and education, Kravis has supported a number of innovative educational initiatives, such as providing scholarships for Tulsa public school teachers to attend the Oklahoma Fall Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain, and the Kravis Discovery Center at the Gilcrease Museum. Additionally, Kravis has been a committed supporter of the Tulsa Symphony and Tulsa Ballet. He is currently on the board of the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture and the Collections Committee of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and is a former board member of Living Arts and the Price Tower Art Center in Bartlesville. Kravis started the Tulsa Art Car Parade and was co-founder of the Circle Cinema in Tulsa. With his passion for the preservation of significant examples of twentieth-century architecture and love for his home state, Kravis has supported many projects including the publication of Tulsa Art Deco. George established the Kravis Design Center to further his educational mission in the field of the design arts by making his collection available to scholars.Tulsa businessman and philanthropist George R. Kravis II was no. 36 in 2011 of Art + Auction magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the art world.

The idea is that artists can develop their sense of aesthetics by learning from example, and to a point, that’s true. However, some designs require no explanation. The designs feature...
