This is obviously a well-researched biography of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, a figure of political and social consequence from her teen years when she married the duke in 1774 to her death in 1806. The book is studded with the surviving letters by her and about her that Foreman traveled throug...
It was a good book and an interesting subject; however, the author's prose is so lifeless that it was hard to get through. I found myself struggling to keep my eyes on the page.
British Aristocracy - 18th C. Unabridged. From wiki: Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (née Spencer) 7 June 1757 – 30 March 1806 was the first wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire, and mother of the 6th Duke of Devonshire. Her father, the 1st Earl Spencer, was a great-grandson of the 1st Duke...
Georgiana was a very interesting lady - on one hand, she was terribly insecure in her personal relationships and spent ridiculous amounts of money on gambling, while on the other, she was a loyal friend and shrewd politician in an age where women didn't have much power. She managed to hold her own ...
I loved this book. I expected it to be well-written and informative, but it was so much engaging than I ever could have anticipated. It is easy to see why Amanda Formeman might have fallen a little in love with Georgiana; indeed, it is difficult to see how anyone could fail to do so. Here is a woman...
Foreman takes us into the world that is the ton of English society in the 18th century. It is a world where men can be a great many of things and women can support them in this, but not too much or they're accused of being vulgar and improper. Enter the highly spirited and opinionated Georgiana Spen...
Read this about a year ago, after getting back into reading Regency and historical romance. An amazing book - extremely detailed (and some tough slogging) but the insight it gives into the *real* lives and thoughts of English aristocrats and politicians of the time (late Georgian, early Regency) is ...
AKA the book that The Duchess starring Keira Knightly was based on. Georgiana lived during the late Georgian and early Regency periods, so having all that Heyer under my belt makes the book that much more interesting, because I recognize people and cultural references. It was really interesting as p...
Georgiana was a wealthy, titled lady who married into an even wealthier, better titled family* and spent the remainder of her days being a leader of fashion and politics. This was an excellent biography of a notable woman. Unlike ealier time periods, this was an era of paper. All of Georgiana's fr...
A biography of a facinating woman, ahead of her time she is a spirited woman who refuses to bow down and be a doormat to convention, though this brings its own problems. I felt myself engaged in her struggle and wanted to know more about her as I read through the book. Definitely a character I would...
