Wow this was powerful. I had to read this for a YA book training coming out and fount it an interesting book to choose for teens considering its not exactly YA. But it was so good. I was hooked from the beginning and really felt the emotions of the main character. Ana was ten years old when she w...

This is an enlightening story about what it can be like to grow up in a civil war and then to escape to another country that was mostly dissociated with it. Or be forced out, depending on how you look at that part of it but I don't want to spoil anything either. While parts of the story can be a bit ...

Not particularly well-written, and it seemed like it was meant for a younger audience. Lots of telling, not showing, and it didn't feel very convincing or that there were any real emotions connected to what went on. Too much jumping around, rather than building the story. Disappointing.

Particularly good novels in this category include Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; The Tiger’s Wife by Te...

In Girl at War, by Sara Nović, Ana returns to Zagreb to find any friends and family who survived the war, hunger, and genocide. Girl at War is the story ...

When starting this book, I didn’t expect the experience I had from reading it. Girl at War is a beautifully written, intense, and captivating début novel. If I hadn’t known this was Nović’s début, I’d have assumed there was a backlist to check out. There isn’t, yet, though. This author is just that ...
