It's been over ten years since I read this book.Apart from name-dropping galore, I suppose it was a quick read and rather engaging. But there are more important books around.
I've heard people complain about how difficult it is to read 'Vanity Fair' with its numerous references to the culture and politics of the early 19th century, but Thackeray has nothing on Ellis.
