Eleven year old Gregor is stuck at home with his poor grandmother and baby sister instead of going to summer camp like every normal kid. His mother has to go to work, as his father disappeared just over 2 years ago. He is stuck babysitting his sister and his slightly delusional grandmother, when he falls through a grate in the laundry room of his New York City apartment building. With his two-year-old sister, Boots (also known as Margaret), he lands in the Underland. Here giant spiders, rats, and cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. Because a prophecy foretells that an Overlander will play an important role in the uncertain future of Underland (which is on the brink of war), Gregor's arrival is treated as no accident. When he learns his father's disappearance may have something to do with the Underland, Gregor reluctantly embarks on a life-changing adventure.

4.0 Book 49/100: Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
Usually I am not a huge fan of the "child falls into another world" sub-genre of fantasy, but this one was better than most.It took quite a while to get going -- about 25 percent of the book is spent just on worldbuilding and introducing characters and the concept of "The Underland." I got a little ...

3.0 Gregor the Overlander
Quite elementary, but a fun enough story. Probably targeted for 4th to 8th graders. I'll do a full review when I finish the series.********There must be a lot of Suzanne Collins fans out there reviewing with their hearts, because there's no way the books I just read deserve the glowing reviews the...

Gregor is eleven years old. He lives with his mom, grandmother, and two little sisters, Lizzie, seven, and Boots, who's just two. His dad--a fun, gentle, sax-playing, intellectually inquisitive man--vanished while his mom was pregnant with Boots. It's the beginning of a hot, sticky New York summer, ...
