The Pale Blue Eye is like that because it features a young Edgar Allen Poe when he was a West Point cadet. I enjoyed it thoroughly and in this instance, the historical connections made it a stronger, more compelling read.

I have several favorite mystery authors: Lawrence Sanders (Archy McNally series), James Lee Burke (Dave Robicheaux series) and some rather interesting one-offs: The Pale Blue Eye by Louis Bayard and Fingersmith, both novels that embrace mystery elements.
