Reading the Victorians discussion: 2015-03-05 - 2015-03-31: Far from the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy, Rosemarie Morgan, Shannon Russel

Madding is an old-fashioned word that means 'busy', rather than 'mad', in otherwords, the subway at 8.30am is madding. And the point Hardy is making, I think, is that quite a lot goes on in the backwaters. I love this novel, but he did have trouble about his end! more »
