Lucy Barton was the victim of a poverty-stricken childhood, forced to live in squalor alongside her dirty siblings, their distant mother and a father who suffered from severe PTSD. She grew accustomed to her loneliness as the other children at school only judged and ridiculed her behind her back. When the opportunity arose to go away to college, Lucy did not hesitate to break away from her miserable life and seize the chance to make a fresh start. She eventually married and relocated to New York City where she and her husband raised their children. Her family grew ever more resentful of her new life and the wedge between them only grew as time passed by.
