Herman Louis Schreiner (1923-2011) was nicknamed "Duke" while serving in the Naval Air Forces during WWII. He was called "Herm" otherwise. He grew up in Hastings, Nebraska, with a passion for drafting, model air planes, and pulp magazines (especially aviation-related such as "G-8 and His Battle Aces").After graduating from high school, Herm worked for Douglas Aircraft as a tracer before enlisting in the Navy V-12 program and then into V-5 Naval Aviation. When he became a pilot he hoped to be assigned to carrier duty, but by then the War was almost over and this did not occur. Thereafter he continued in his love for flying via a commercial pilot's license.Herm's love of aviation history eventually led him to the American Aviation Historical Society(AAHS) where he served as a director for many years. He authored several stories for the AAHS Journal including, "Bill Barnes--Alive and Well at Eighty" and "From Pulp to Slick". His decades of devotion to collecting anything related to aviation history resulted in the creation of an aeronautica business called "Wings, LTD" which specialized in back issue magazines, books, plans, model kits, and relics. His collections are now being cared for by his son, Carlton Schreiner, who has created a website about this at www.Flyboy45.com.Herm had a long friendship with Ed Packard. He greatly admired him and he was determined to write a book about Mr. Packard and Cleveland Model Supply while Mr Packard was still in this world and could enjoy the well-deserved tribute.
