Valerie's grief and self-hatred and her whole journey dealing with the school shooting and being Nick's girlfriend are very nuanced. I like that Brown was brave enough to have her parents be total jerks in a realistic way. edited to add: But wtf happened with Jeremy? There should have been follow up...
