Do you suffer a burning sensation in the chest after each meal? If so, you may be suffering from heartburn, an intestinal disease known to doctors as GERD (Gastroesophagael reflux diseases). Heartburn is a medical condition where that acid present in the stomach goes to the oesophagus, disrupting its normal function and giving you a burning sensation. It may interest you to know that our stomach contains many acids to digest foods (bile) and several other digestive enzymes such as pepsin. As soon as the acids get into the oesophagus, it causes a burning sensation which prevents the oesophagus from performing its functions of send the food to the stomach through the actions of the muscles of the esophagus. There is also a special one way valve that prevents the acids of the stomach from getting out into the esophagus. The operation or function of this one way valve may be impaired due to an unfavorable condition, and allow some quantity of the stomach acids access into the oesophagus. This causes heartburns inside your stomach. This one way valve of the esophagus is located at the bottom of the esophagus and is medically referred to as “Oesophageal sphincter” (LES).Heartburn occurs when the relaxation of the muscles of the oesophagus is weak or loose, and allows the acids of the stomach to flow back into the o esophagus.
