Herbert Anderson's career of teaching pastoral care began at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1969 and continued until he retired as Research Professor in Practical Theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley at the end of 2013. He probably holds the Guinness Books of Records for having taught a course on the 'Introduction to Pastoral Care' 55 times in 44 years of teaching. Perhaps his most challenging assignment during all those years was to be the "first man" to his wife Phyllis Anderson who was the President of a theological seminary in Berkeley. In addition to teaching and writing, he cooked dinners for donors and visiting dignitaries and sought to create an hospitable gathering place for students and faculty and visiting friends. He is a Lutheran pastor who is at the same Emeritus Professor of Pastoral Theology of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Both his new book, The Divine Art of Dying, co-authored by Karen Speerstra, and his first book All Our Losses, All Our Griefs, co-authored with Kenneth Mitchell, reflect his ongoing interest in death and dying, loss and grieving and the challenges to 'dying in America'. He is retired and still cooking with wine in Sonoma, California.
