Strange things are happening at Hexwood Farm, not far from London. On another world entirely, a harassed Sector Controller gets a letter from a maintenance team apparently trapped in Hexwood. A small boy called Hume encounters a robot and a dragon there. Ann Stavely, lying in bed with a virus in her nearby home, watches person after person disappear into the old farmhouse and not come out again. When she feels better, Ann decides to investigate. She goes into the wood, where she meets a tormented sorcerer called Mordion who seems to have arisen from a sleep lasting centuries. Yet Ann knows she has seen him enter the farmhouse that morning. Nothing seems to happen in the right order. Nothing quite makes sense. And things keep getting stranger and stranger until, long before the end, the strangeness has spread from Earth right out to the center of the galaxy. Here is another intriguing novel by a master of the unexpected.

It was such a pleasure to find a Diana Wynne Jones book I hadn't read yet, and better yet have it be a great one. 'Hexwood' must be one of Jones' most complicated plots. The non-sequential narrative and the grand re-interpretation of English myth reminded me of 'Time of the Ghost' and 'Fire and He...
Hexwood is a standalone novel, first published in 1993. It’s also a book that I love and I feel like no one else does? If you’re a fellow Hexwood fan, let me know! I can understand why people don’t necessarily like it. It’s a bit like the end of Fire & Hemlock, except an entire book’s worth–and qu...
I’m not an actual speed reader but I sometimes do skim through pages if I want to get quickly to a certain scene or whatever. I must have done that the first time I read Hexwood, because if I’d been paying proper attention I think I would have understood it better. Or maybe it just takes more than o...
This book had the same feel as other Jones' books--quirky, imaginative, feel good--but slightly more mature. As such I really enjoyed it. The characters are unique and fun, and the story, while simple, has a bit of unpredictability to it. All in all an entertaining read.
Probably the latest written of Jones' great novels, although I do feel like she gets back to good after the unfortunate Magids/Sudden Wild Magic dip.
