In the eyes of the law, an adopted child becomes a member of their new family the day the court finalizes the paperwork. But in the hearts of these new families, that day begins long before any court is involved. Each family has a special and unique story of love and adoptive mother Hilary Anderson has unveiled a very personal project - a children's book she spent the past year writing and illustrating to celebrate her three adopted children's journey from one set of loving arms into her family. Anderson's self-published book, Inside My Heart: A Tender Story of Adoption, is a true passion project. She and husband Matt, a Sacramento fire captain, endured miscarriages and unsuccessful fertility treatments before turning to adoption. Today, they have four children - two adopted boys and a girl - and a biological 'miracle' son. As her children grew, Anderson was inspired by their journey to her family, and a poem, later a story, began to emerge. Most surprising to this self-proclaimed "non-artist," was her desire to illustrate her own story in beautiful watercolor and pen and ink illustrations. The overall effect is charming, touching and ultimately a perfect way to engage young children. While she calls this a 'children's book,' Anderson says it reaches across all aisles - speaking to adopted children, their parents, and to birth moms who have placed for adoption.
