Another Sherlock Holmes involved book - this time the woman is his sister and a little less Mary-Sue ish. A series of interlocking adventures for Charlotte, almost like some of the earlier Holmes stories.
I've wanted to read more of the VMC series and have never read anything by Christina Stead. As the back cover describes this one's female character as "a big, handsome, sluttish woman of thirty-two," it seemed like a good place to start.
This books is in many ways better than Marion Zimmer Bradley's Firebrand, which also deals with the character of Cassandra. Cassandra does not descend into a "I know everything better" stock female character, and the story itself also presents the viewpoint of other key center characters. It seems...
