What a letdown. I just think it was a bit of a disappointment as Sarah is not the main character. You don't to get know about what happens to Sarah and Becky and also the events that happen in the school with just the girls are pretty boring as they are just everyday things and constant letter writi...

I absolutely adored the first Binny book, as well as most of McKay’s books. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this one at first, as it cuts Binny’s story with the story of Clarry in the 1910s. While I think it ultimately worked, I didn’t love it quite as much as the first one. Still, any McKay boo...

And again, not a cover that says "family comedy". This looks like a very dated ad for some sort of children's allergy medicine. Library copy

The cover says "earnest", and also "heartfelt", maybe even "moving". What it doesn't say is "funny". It's the British Penderwicks, not a problem novel about a parent off at war. But just for fun, feel free to share what the cover image makes you think the book will be about.Library copy

Tremendously appealing book about four sisters spending the summer with their grandmother with nothing to read. Please ignore the hideously dated cover.Library copy

I love all of the Lulu books. I love how Mellie and Lulu work together, despite their very different personalities (actually I have just realized that I would love a book from Mellie’s point of view) and I love Nan.

I’ve been going on about how wonderful Hilary McKay is, and how wonderful her Lulu books in particular are. But they really make me quite happy! I enjoyed the neighbors in this one, and Lulu’s absolute conviction that everyone should love animals as much as she does.

Although I love Hilary McKay’s books for slightly older readers, as has been well documented, this recent early chapter book series is so lovely! Lulu loves animals and collects them everywhere she goes. Usually this involves the help of her cousin and best friend Mellie, who is a very different per...

Like most readers who love classic literature I am generally appalled by modern sequels to great classic works. One of the worst books I've had the misfortune to read was a 'sequel' to Sherlock Holmes. But then again, one of my favorite recent series was a 'sequel' to Sherlock Holmes. So, I know ...

So, I have very fond memories of A Little Princess from childhood, and the story is lovely and magical and candlelit in my mind. And obviously, when a book that's been adored for a century suddenly begets a sequel, there's a concern that it'll go the way of Scarlett, and you'll have to divorce it e...
