Hillel Levine is Professor of Sociology and Religion at Boston University and President of the International Center for Conciliation. This NGO that trains community leaders on four continents and at many "hot spots" of intractable conflict to prevent and respond to religious and ethnic incitements and to transform pained and transmitted memory into empathy and community building modes of memorialization. He is Harvard educated and studied for the rabbinate with the great Jewish theologian and peacemaker, Abraham Joshua Heschel. He has taught at Harvard, Yale, and has held visiting professorships in Japan, India, China, Poland, the Soviet Union, Morocco, Brazil and Israel. His research provided the basis of an Oscar-winning documentary film, and his case study of altruism is optioned for a feature-length film. His books include "In Search of Sugihara: The Elusive Japanese Diplomat Who Risked his Life to Rescue 10,000 Jews From the Holocaust," "Economic Origins of Antisemitism : Poland and Its Jews in the Early Modern Period," and "The Death of an American Jewish Community: A Tragedy of Good Intentions," about the redlining of mortgages enacted by the banking consortium, Boston Banks Urban Renewal Group, in Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan in the 1960s, precursor to the more recent real estate scandals with their devastating impact on families, communities and the global economy. His more recent research focuses on how bureaucracies impede truth-telling and responsibility-taking and how our legacy of "Sunday School ethics" and our queries about "Who put their hands in the cookie-jar?" are inadequate to understand and to regulate the new conspiracies that facilitate "mega-destructiveness perpetrated with good consciences." He often gives lectures, appears on radio and television, and writes guest columns in newspapers.
