This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader as part of the United States of Books Project. --- It's time for my home state here in this little series we're doing: Idaho, featuring the book Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. Set in the fictional town of Fingerbone, in the Northern part of ...

There was a time I labeled myself a non-conformist. It was a short time, or at least I want to believe so. Like your typical socially inept nerd, I could not fit the norms and weren’t interested in them. There was supposed to be some vague ‘alternative’ or ‘underground’, but the impression I got is ...

At its heart, Housekeeping is a beautiful little story inflated with gorgeous big words. The focus in this novel is definitely on language. While the characters are good and the story certainly stands on its own, the language is what makes this novel striking. At times, the words Robinson uses are p...

When reading it during a fairly stressful time in my young life, this book had a palpably calming effect, like the words washed over my troubled mind with their effortless grace. The imagery was memorable, the concern for home-making timely,...

It is a coming of age story, but when I read these I'm never struck as profoundly by the characters or their ordeal as I should be. In this book, two girls (abandoned by t...

The thing I liked about the book was the writing (prose). The author is obviously very talented in describing places and quiet moments. She managed to pull me in and kept me engaged on the strength of her skill with the word. Best description of the novel, quiet. The biggest disappointment in the boo...

I read this a while ago. The "crazy" aunt had OCD with newspapers and the ending was a surprise. Where she found happiness by just being who she wanted to be. The movie was great.

Old-fashioned, descriptive writing. Highly character-driven rather than plot driven. For some this may equal boring. Nice writing though.
