Let's acknowledge right up front that this book is based on a gimmick, a slick writer's gimmick, and that to pull it off it's going to take a bit of work and luck and not a small amount of talent, and even then, it's risky. When I read the opening sentence, "Look, unless you're writing one, a self...

I really love this book. For many reasons. First perhaps is because of the truly original choice of writing it in the second person, instead of the usual first or third. Somehow, I felt it really worked to get me more empathic with the main character.Second is the strong link with Pakistan, a countr...

I wish I could give half stars ratings. I loved the framing of this book, but the story itself paled in comparison. Brilliant, brilliant book. Formally daring, withering and pointed about the realities of contemporary life on the Indian subcontinent, deeply insightful, humane and touching.

In How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, Mohsin Hamid turns Horatio Alger stories on their head. Gone is the story of a boy finding success through virtuous good deeds, ethical behavior, and hard work. In its place is the story of a nameless hero – a young boy trapped by poverty pushed into busines...
