Hugh Gilmore lives in Philadelphia, where he owns and operates a used and rare book business and writes a weekly column about books and reading for the Chestnut Hill Local newspaper. (The column, called, "The Enemies of Reading," can also be found on the paper's website: Chestnuthilllocal.com). He also blogs at "Enemiesofreading.blogspot.com".Not so long ago Hugh lived in Kenya, East Africa, where he studied baboons, and in St. Kitts, British West Indies, where he studied vervet monkeys. For what he refers to as "four glorious years" he lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan while teaching in the anthropology department at the University of Michigan.Hugh has written feature stories and reviews for The Baltimore Sun, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Louisville Courier, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Detroit Free Press, among others. In 1990 he received a First Place award from the National Association of Sunday Magazine Editors for his feature story "Life After Death." The article described his attempts to recover from the loss of his oldest son, Colin, to a drunk driver.Since the year 2000 Hugh has written three novels. Malcolm's Wine is the first to see print. In 1995, however, a chapter from his first novel ("Garner's Last Ride"), titled "If you're my father, then I'm y'er son," won First Place for Character Development in a Novel at the Philadelphia Writers Annual Conference.Hugh lives with his wife, the fabric artist and writer, Janet Gilmore, and son, Andrew (also a writer, comedian, actor, and 78-rpm record collector) in the leafy Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.Hugh welcomes readers to contact him at hughmore@yahoo.com.
